The Work of the Holy Spirit | The Theonauts

The Work of the Holy SpiritIn this episode of The Theonauts we discuss the person, purpose, and work of the Holy Spirit. In our modern Christianity it almost seems as if the Holy Spirit gets left out in discussions of Christ. Francis Chan actually calls the Holy Spirit a Forgotten God in his book by that name. Join us as we take a look at Jesus’ life and ministry. The work of the Holy Spirit is extremely vital in the ministry of Jesus.

  • Jesus was born through the work of the Spirit (Luke 1:35).
  • Jesus was baptized and led by the Spirit (Luke 3-4).
  • Jesus performed miracles through the work of the Spirit (Matt. 12:28).
  • Jesus was offered as a sin sacrifice through the Spirit (Heb. 9:14).
  • Jesus was even raised from the dead through the power of the Holy Spirit (Romans 8:11).

The same Spirit that worked through the ministry of Jesus is the one He promised to us in John 14. Jesus tells his followers that the Spirit will be a helper, which leads them into understanding and righteousness. Many times we focus on the gifts that the Spirit gives us, and not the purpose behind those gifts. Much like people focused on the miracles of Jesus without understanding the reason behind those miracles; which was to proclaim Him as the Messiah.

The Nature of the Holy Spirit’s Work

We also should realize that the work of the Holy Spirit is two-fold. First, the Spirit’s work is to conform us into the likeness of Jesus. Secondly His work is to reveal to others that Jesus is the Messiah.

By obeying the Holy Spirit, we will be lead into sanctification, learning to Love God and others. The Holy Spirit guides us through scripture in following Jesus, which then produces fruit in the believer (Galatians 5). Unlike following a set of rules, we are actually following the indwelling Spirit which guides and directs us through conviction and the Word.

The Spirit’s second purpose is in revealing the Messiah to the world. He does this by gifting and directing His church to fulfill its purpose in unity. 1 Corinthians tells us that we are gifted by the Holy Spirit in many ways; much like a body is gifted with many parts which function as one. In this way we are to reach others with the message of Jesus, so that they may come to believe and be saved. The Holy Spirit (or Pneuma in Greek) is a full member of the Trinity, and a freeing part of a believers life.
